I don’t know about you, but when it’s cold outside, I like to read books set in the cold—not only because it fits the hibernation mode I exist in during that season, but because it’s much easier to feel those descriptors when I’m cold myself. Can I feel my fingers right now? Not so much. But neither can these characters, probably. If you’re like me, saving your winter thrillers for winter, check out this short list to find a couple more to add to your TBR.
Martin and Alexandra move with their two children to a cottage on the island of Orust, on the west coast of Sweden, where he starts a mussel farm. The locals don’t like this, for some reason, and when one day his phone rings, he leaves his son for just a moment. When he returns, the boy is gone, leaving only his little red bucket behind. When Maya Linde, police photographer, arrives to document the scene, she and Martin start to investigate. They grow closer as they learn that other children have died in these waves, on the same day in January… and there’s just no way that’s a coincidence.

I can’t handle regular winter in Georgia, so when I imagine winter in Minnesota, it’s a sheet of white. That’s where we are when state troopers in a small town extract a car with two young women from the mostly frozen Black Root River. One of them is found drowned down river, but the other miraculously survives. As she recovers, she learns their wreck was no accident, and she’s determined to learned more… especially after she hears of another woman who lost her life in the same way, ten years earlier. And she grows even more suspicious when she realizes the method of death is not all they have in common.

Boston winter is ice over cobblestones, and the winter of 1951 is the worst the city can remember. The residents are recovering from the Second World War, the Brink robbery, and our lifelong friend protagonists are both fighting addictions as well. Dante has an addiction to heroin, and when his sister-in-law is murdered by a suspected serial killer, his alcoholic best friend, heavy, and former policeman Cal is the one to inform him. The novel follows them through the winter as they team up to solve her murder and bring her justice.

Here’s a bit of a cozy, which is perfect for winter because even if you can leave the house, why would you want to? Except for instead of a house, we’re talking about a boarding school in Antibes, France. During a snowstorm twenty-five years ago, 19-year-old student Vinca Rockwell ran away with her philosophy teacher, and she was never seen again. On the other hand, three friends at the school who have not spoken since graduation committed a murder and buried the body in the gymnasium wall. They have to return for their high school reunion because the gym is about to be demolished. Man, this one could take off in any direction, am I right?

I’m a big fan of the creeping, Gothic suspense that Sarah Moss writes, and it surprised me to learn that this incredible novel was actually her first. When six archaeologists arrive in Greenland at the beginning of the summer to investigate a lost Viking settlement there, it’s already cold. As the arctic winter sets in, though, they realize how unprepared they are for such an intense season. Plus, they receive word of a growing epidemic from the world back home, and communications between them stutter and cease, leaving them both completely alone and also perhaps safer than those among civilization. Will they survive? And if they do, at what cost?
